Warning : Talk of child murder (canonical) Title from : Just a Man from EPIC : The Musical Chronology : Post-Open Arms
The Lotus Eaters were friendly, as it turned out. Odysseus almost felt bad for threatening them, but he brushed that aside. Lord knows he had enough guilt on his conscience.
"You're thinking so loudly" Polites teased, poking his friend on the head. Odysseus sighed and nodded, managing a half-hearted smile in response. "What plagues you, friend?"
"I can't stop thinking about that kid" Odysseus admitted. "I mean, I'm trying to brush it off- I've killed plenty of people, it's not like he was the first, but..." A heavy exhale. "He was just an infant boy, Polites"
"You did what you had to" Polites tried to reassure, but Odysseus shook his head in disagreement.
"There must've been another way" he insisted. "That's not right. It didn't feel good"
"Murder shouldn't feel good regardless"
"Yeah, but normally I can desensitize myself to it" Odysseus explained. "That kid was the same age my son was when I left for war. I just can't help but think about how distraught I'd be if that was someone else killing my boy"
"You had a literal god demanding you to" Polites told him firmly. "No one could blame you for that"
"When does a man become a monster?" Odysseus asked, tears pricking at his eyes despite his attempts to force them back. "I kept asking myself that, trying to justify killing the kid, since Zeus told me it was only a matter of time, but..." Another heavy sigh. "Aren't I the real monster?"
"You're not a monster, Odysseus"
"You promise?"
"With all my heart"
...
"Thanks, Polites"
