Full title : The Panic That Grips Him Regularly
Prompt : Write a fic in which a character has a panic attack (whether it be due to an anxiety/panic disorder or because of some other trigger)
Chronology : During their days working at Power Line, post-all the flashback stuff
Johanna entered Gilbert's office to ask a question only to find him clutching his chest and breathing heavily. She frowned for a moment, sad to see that anxiety had, once again, overtaken the man, but she quickly put on a smile and entered.
"Hey, Gil" she greeted. He just glanced up at her for a moment before returning his focus to his rapid heartbeat. She walked over and sat in the chair next to his desk, which had been put in there for whenever she came to check on him, which was often. "Panic attack?" A nod. "Okay, look at me"
Gilbert did as he was told, though his gaze darted around rapidly rather than stay fixed on her face. "Good job" Johanna praised before holding her hands out, palms up, to him. He told them in his own and squeezed tight, shutting his eyes and breathing tightly as he did so. Johanna winced slightly at the sudden pressure around her hands but said nothing. "Did anything specifically bring this on?"
"I don't know" he said breathlessly. "I don't know, I don't know, I don't know"
"Okay" Johanna nodded, her smile remaining. "That's okay" she reassured. "Just focus on me, okay? You're safe"
Then, the phone rang, and Gilbert began shaking like a leaf. "It's okay" Johanna told him. "Someone else will pick up. You aren't the only employee here"
"Useless" Gilbert chastised himself. Johanna shook her head earnestly.
"You aren't useless" she replied. "You're just freaked out right now, and that's okay. Focus on me"
This went on for about ten more minutes until Gilbert finally calmed down and opened his eyes again, this time solidly looking at his girlfriend. "I'm sorry" he apologized with a hefty exhale. Johanna just smiled, reaching forward and cupping his face in her hand.
"No 'sorry's" she told him. "It's okay"
"I just wish I wasn't such a panicky mess"
"I don't mind" she replied, and Gilbert smiled for the first time since the panic attack had initially gripped him.
"Thank you"
