Full title on AO3 : The Forgotten Daughters of the Neglectful War Deities
Chronology : Pre-The Last Day of Summer
Headcanon : They're both aged up to about 16 years old. It's not for any gross reasons and doesn't really affect the plot, it's just cause it's based on the play and it's kinda hard to read teenage and/or adult actors as being 12-ish years old
Clarisse followed Annabeth away from where Percy was to give the boy from space. As much as the former didn't exactly love the boy, she still respected him enough to leave him be when he'd just been through such a long quest. Besides, she knew Luke would probably want to talk to him, being one of the only other people who had taken a quest and whatnot.
"I can't believe dad didn't mention me" Clarisse grumbled, kicking a rock with an indignant groan. Annabeth would've laughed if the conversation were about something less serious but, having felt that lack of love from her own godly parent, she understood the feeling. Clarisse sighed. "Actually, I totally can believe it"
"Yeah, godly parents aren't exactly the most caring, are they?" Annabeth muttered bitterly as she sat on one of the campfire logs to sharpen her sword and consider everything her, Percy, and Grover had gone through over the past few days. Clarisse shot her a glance and sat next to her.
"No word from mom?"
"Nope" Annabeth said, getting a bit more aggressive with the way she slide the blade across the wood of the log. She growled in such a visceral way that Clarisse almost flinched. She knew the blonde could get worked up, but this felt more personal than any petty Capture the Flag tiffs they'd gotten in before. Oh, insignificant those felt now with a potential war on the horizon. "You'd think that, considering everything that we did- That I did on this quest, you'd think she'd... I don't know. It's dumb"
"It's not dumb!" Clarisse said maybe a bit too quickly and a bit too genuinely. Annabeth looked up at her like she had three heads. "I mean, uh..." Clarisse cleared her throat awkwardly and hoped her face wasn't as red as she felt like it was. "It's not... That dumb, y'know, for you to-"
She was cut off by the other girl wrapping her arms around her and she swore she felt her brain short circuit because Annabeth Chase was hugging her and, Titan, this was weird. She admittedly didn't completely hate it, though, so she resisted the impulsive urge to shove the other girl off.
After a moment, Annabeth also seemed to clue into how weird this was, as she quickly pulled away and muttered out a string of frantic apologies.
"Shit, sorry, I-"
"It's fine" Clarisse told her, surprised to realize that she meant it. She pondered for a moment before managing her best smile and looking at the othet girl. "Friends?"
Annabeth thought over this prospect in her mind for a moment. She never hated Clarisse. A small part of her was always admittedly rather fond of the hard-headed daughter of the far less dignified war god. Besides, what was the point of going on this huge quest if she couldn't even try to give second chances to those more deserving than her mother?
She managed a smile of her own as she looked back up at the other girl.
"We can try for it"
