They were sitting by each other at the bus stop, waiting for the transit to arrive.
There was no doubt that they were suspicious of each other (or more L was suspicious that Light was the infamous Kira- Light was more just trying to stay under the radar with him), but they oddly enjoyed one another's company despite that. L could imagine that Light wasn't actually Kira, even though it seemed so obvious that he was. He could temporarily pretend that he wasn't considering the other man as the number one suspect, because his presence was just, sickly... Nice.
"I don't get outside too often, as you may have guessed" L broke the silence, his voice a bit awkward as his people skills were still not great, but Light didn't seem to mind. "The last time I was out here... Hell, it must've been before..." he trailed off a bit uncomfortably. Light cocked his head, confused. Sure, L could hide things, as did he, but he'd never seen the detective trail off like that. He never spoke unless he meant it, so what could cause this disruption?
"Before what?"
"Mmm" L hummed slightly in response, not looking at the suspect. He checked his watch- Another 10 minutes before the bus would arrive. He couldn't just ignore Light for such a length of time- He may not have been great at people but he at least understood that. He just also didn't know where Light stood on certain topics and since he didn't yet know the full extent of Kira's abilities, he may have been at risk of immediate death if Light was Kira and if he did discriminate... A predicament.
"You don't have to tell me" Light assured him, finding himself unnerved by the other man's apparent anxiety. "I understand you need to keep things under wraps with the Kira case and everything"
"It's not that" L replied, bouncing his leg as a subtle fidget to try and offset his worry. "It's just..." A deep breath. Truthfully, he knew he was potentially risking his life just being in the prime suspect's presence, so this shouldn't have been so nerve-wracking. And yet, his hands were trembling as he tried to find the words. Oh, if only he'd just kept his mouth shut. But, he hadn't. "I was going to say I haven't been here since before... I transitioned"
...
"As in your career choice, or...?" Light asked. He could hear Ryuk laughing behind him but ignored it.
"No" L replied, swallowing harshly. "As in... I am biologically female but my brain's development of gender was more in line with that of a male so I both socially and medically made adjustments to align more with that" he explained, afraid to actually use the word transgender and instead giving an unnecessarily clinical description. It hardly mattered though. It wasn't uncharacteristic for him to talk so objectively.
"Okay" Light replied after a moment of figuring out what that sentence implied. L risked a glance at the other man, a nervous expression on his face. "What, were you expecting me to be upset or something?"
"People tend to have that response more often than you might realize"
"Well, I mean" Light shrugged. "It doesn't change anything about you, in my eyes"
"No?"
"Nope" Light replied with a nod. "You're still L. Still an undeniably talented detective and tennis opponent"
L didn't know how to respond. Thankfully, he didn't have to because the bus arrived at the stop right then.
They silently entered the vehicle, standing silently next to each other until they reached their individual stops.
