Headcanon : Autistic!Johanna
It had been a normal day at work, a few days into his new job as a Power Line counselor. She walked in to check on him like she did whenever she had a break but was startled to find him trembling in his seat, breathing heavily. The most confusing part? The phone wasn't even ringing.
"Gilbert" she said quietly, knocking on his desk to get his attention. He flinched and looked at her with wide eyes. She frowned. "What's going on?" she asked calmly. "Did you miss another phone call or something?"
"N-No" he stuttered out, his breath coming out in sharp gasps. His whole body was visibly shaking and he looked like he'd just seen a ghost. "No, I was just overthinking. What if... Fuck, what if I'm actually really bad at this? God, what if I get fired? I don't have a bac-"
"Look at me, please, Gilbert" Johanna said gently. The blonde man nervously looked up at her. "Can I hug you?" she asked. He nodded rapidly and so she walked over to where he was sitting at his desk and wrapped her arms around him. "You're okay" she said gently. "And you've made so much progress at work. I'm so proud of you" she praised. "Can you hear my heartbeat?"
"Y-Yes"
"Good" she said soothingly, rubbing his back. "Match my breathing, okay?" she coaxed before beginning to take long, deep breaths, which he shakily matched. "That's good. Just like that"
"S-Sorry I'm like- That I'm like this"
"Don't apologize" she shook her head, continuing to breathe deeply. He was slowly beginning to shake less in her arms but she didn't dare let go of him. "I knew what I was getting into when I agreed to date you, dumbass"
"I- I know, but-"
"Shhh" she shushed him. "Just listen to my heartbeat, Gil" she said gently. "I lo... Woah"
"You what?"
"I... Love you?" she said, surprised with herself. Gilbert stilled in her arms and she worried she had made it worse. They'd only been dating for a few days.
...
"Sorry, I-"
"No" he cut her off, pulling out of the hug and giving her a kiss. It was breathy, as he was still a bit panicked, but he meant every bit of it. "It's okay. I love you too" he breathed. "Thank you, Johanna"
"Okay"
