Headcanon : Claire has chronic pain
Claire would have these terrible pains throughout her body beyond just the usual hunger pains and bruising from the horrendous neglect and abuse she endured.
No, these other pains were ones she didn't have an explanation for. A deep ache in her back or legs or shoulders that would just crop up out of nowhere and leave her especially miserable.
Usually she could grin and bear it enough to go through her usual daily tasks of taking care of the adults in her life, but sometimes they would immobilize her. During these times, she would lock herself in her room until she could move again.
One of these particular days, when she awoke, her back hurt so much that she could just barely get up for long enough to make sure that her door was sufficiently barricaded before she collapsed back to the ground.
It wasn't long before the faint cries of her needy family began, so she shut her eyes tight and imagined she was that happy little girl on the billboard across the street.
Opal's parents would see her pain for what it was. And that's all she really wanted at that moment.
