Prompt : Write a fic (can be hurt/comfort, fluff, whatever the author sees fit) where a character has a cleft lip (palate is optional) and it's been repaired but their smile is a bit crooked because of it OR it's unrepaired and their smile is very open because of it
Chronology : Post-canon
Background relationships : Amos/Roxie (past), Roxie/Velma (mentioned)
Headcanon : Amos has a cleft lip
Velma hadn't commented on it.
She was sure her surprise at the malformation and scarring on Amos' lip was thinly veiled. She doubted that he was unaware of the raising of her eyebrows and the slight drop of her jaw brought on by the fact that, despite how much Roxie shit-talked the man, his deformity had never come up.
But she never asked or commented on it. She figured that would just be rude and, for all her faults, she had no reason to be rude to him.
After her first visit to him, one born more out of curiosity than anything else, the two became friends, which was nice. Amos had never really had a friend before, barring the guys at the garage (none of which he was extremely close with) and most of Velma's interpersonal relationships had been shallow and/or non-platonic.
She found herself spending lots of time around him, and suddenly the jarring facial difference didn't stick out to her as much. Sure, she was still aware of it, but his personality outweighed the initial shock of his appearance and so it fell to the back of her mind.
But then, one day, the two began talking about Roxie.
To be clear, they talked about her pretty often. After all, the two likely wouldn't have crossed paths if it weren't for the blonde, and their dynamic was rather complicated because of it- She was Amos' abusive ex-wife and Velma's less toxic lover and business partner.
However, this time was different because, this time, Amos was opening up about one of the insecurities she'd left him with. What's worse is that he hadn't even planned to bring it up in the first place, meaning that Velma wouldn't have known if it weren't for her triggering the conversation.
"You have a nice smile" she told him randomly. There wasn't any deeper feeling behind it, she just had found herself focusing on her smile briefly. He had a friendly smile. One that made it clear from one look that he was approachable and kind. Little did she know she'd unearthed something with that simple compliment.
"Oh" he said, which was already a bit odd, or at least not the response she'd expected. "That's very kind of you"
"I mean it"
"Okay" he hummed. Velma frowned. He seemed startled at her expression and rushed to correct himself. "Thank you"
"Something's bothering you" Velma told him flatly. Amos sighed. Bingo.
"I've just... No one's ever said that before" he explained. "My smile is crooked, y'know, because of my lip, so I've never heard anything good about it" he continued. "Even Roxie-"
"What did she do?" Velma cut him off, hating where this was going.
"She would, y'know, say really bad things about my smile" he shrugged. "I don't really want to talk about it"
Velma felt a twinge of anger directed toward her girlfriend. She understood that Roxie hadn't been particularly great to him, but hearing it from Amos himself hit a lot harder. She wondered what other insecurities she'd left the poor man with.
"Well, I think your smile is wonderful" she told him firmly. "Fuck whatever Roxie said. She can be really stupid sometimes"
"Thank you, Velma"
