Full title on AO3 : The Woman Still There After Everything Else Caved In
Chronology : Post-canon
Headcanon : Autistic!Amos
Background relationship : Roxie/Amos (past)
Amos barely moved as Katie cleaned up the mess from his post-breakup meltdown, numb to his own feelings and the world around him.
The woman he'd loved for so long was a calloused murderer more concerned with having everything than keeping hold of the one stable thing she'd had since the beginning- Her relationship with him.
That's why he kicked her out.
"Mr. Hart?" Katie said as she finished her clean-up job. Aside from the piano needing new music sheets and certain glass objects being thrown out (they were too shattered to repair), the place looked just as it had before. Not that Amos seemed to notice, given that he was still staring at the wall. "Are you alright?"
"Hm?" Amos hummed in question, though he didn't seem to truly notice her. She frowned. The man had always been reserved but she'd never seen him quite this closed off before- Disconnected from the world around him like a printing press that had gotten suddenly shut down.
She sat down in front of him and held her hands out, taking his in her own. He made no move to stop her, as he was still barely conscious of the world around him.
"Amos?"
"Huh?" he said, this time managing to weakly look at her. She was pretty in the same ways Roxie was, but her beauty went beyond the surface. He saw that now- The care she had for him that his own wife never really did.
She didn't need to cover for him when investigators began to piece together his robbery of Mr. Flynn. She didn't need to clean up his rage-induced mess of the apartment when it was beyond her work hours.
But she did anyway.
"Are you alright?"
"She... Mmm" Amos whimpered, his ability to speak draining quickly from him. Katie frowned. She knew that there was something a bit off about Amos mentally- He hid it well but, sometimes, drips of something almost disordered would slip through the cracks. This seemed to be one of those times.
"...Do you want me to hold you?" she offered him. She'd seen Roxie halfheartedly hold him once when he'd gotten to a state similar to this, unable to speak or comprehend anything. He nodded and so she held him to her chest.
She didn't comment on the fact that he began to cry.
