Prompt : Person A has chronic pain and overworks/overexerts themself far beyond their physical limits. Person B notices and helps
Chronology : Post-canon
Headcanons : Mr. Kirby has chronic pain, Autistic!Mr. Kirby (if you squint), Neurodivergent!Kolenkhov (if you squint)
After everything between Tony and Alice was resolved, Mr. Kirby found himself coming by the house more and more often, admittedly growing a fondness for Alice's chaotic family.
He respected Martin's will to live his best life in all the ways he always wished he could himself. He loved witnessing the young love blossoming between his son and Alice. He loved the fondness that Essie and Ed had for each other. He adored how Penny and Paul were so close. He felt bad for Mr. De Pinna a lot of the time. He came to work past his biases about Rheba and Donald, finding that they were actually lovely people. He never had the courage to ask too many questions about Gay.
Most interesting to him, however, was Essie's ballet instructor and the man who'd thrown him on the floor when they first met. He couldn't quite articulate the fondness he felt for Kolenkhov, though Miriam seemed ever supportive of his clear attraction (not that that was possible, of course. Kolenkhov was a man, it didn't make sense) to the Russian.
Contrary to Martin's theorizing about the source of his physical issues, Mr. Kirby's ever-present pain and stiffness, particularly in his back, did not go away once he became more open to concepts of joy and freedom.
One particular day when he stopped by, Ed requested his help to move some things up from the basement. Now, Mr. Kirby understood that his back could not handle such strain with grace, but he did not want to come across as an impolite guest (though, like Kolenkhov, he was becoming less of a guest and more of a part-time resident), and so he helped.
After a while, the strain on his back was really starting to get to him, and Kolenkhov, who was over at the time to help Essie with her dancing, took notice of how stiff and mechanical Mr. Kirby's movements became.
"Mr. Kirby" Kolenkhov called as Mr. Kirby finished helping a table up onto the main floor. Mr. Kirby turned his attention to the Russian.
"Yes, what is it?"
"Can you assist with something outdoors?" the Russian asked, ignoring Essie's puzzled questions. Mr. Kirby gritted his teeth- He wasn't quite sure he could take helping out anymore- But he nodded and followed the ever-cheery Russian man outside.
Kolenkhov shut the front door and gestured to a small bench that was on the porch. Confused, Mr. Kirby sat down, not saying anything as the other man sat down by him.
"What was it that you needed help with?"
"Nothing" Kolenkhov told him, a small smile growing on his face. Mr. Kirby looked at him in confusion. "You looked so stiff. I remember you said you have back pain. Sit outside help back pain"
"Oh" Mr. Kirby said, allowing a smile to form on his own face. "That's awfully considerate of you, Kolenkhov"
"You can call me Boris" Kolenkhov said. Mr. Kirby considered this for a moment. He wasn't used to getting on a first-name basis with anyone outside of his own family. He took it as a great badge of honor.
"Very well, Boris" he smiled. "In that case, you can call me Anthony"
"Anthony" Kolenkhov tested the name on his tongue. He decided he liked the sound of it. "Anthony"
Not another word was exchanged between them until they went back inside.
