Prompt : Character is on their period, which is incredibly painful on top of their usual chronic pain
Chronology : Pre-TPTGW
Headcanons : FTM!Dennis, Female!Chris, Dennis has chronic pain
Dennis wasn't really one for dramatics, but he honest-to-god felt like death would be preferable to the situation he was in.
He'd been on testosterone for years and had long ago said goodbye to the nightmare that was his menstrual cycle. However, he'd recently gotten his dosage flip-flopped around a bit, and so he was having his first period in years.
His periods had always been a bit painful- Not to a medical extent or anything, but enough to where he'd feel nauseous from the pain if he didn't down some medication. That combined with his chronic pain, specifically that in his lower back?
Yeah, no. He wanted to die.
What was worse is that rehearsals for A Murder at Haversham Manor had finally reached the scene where he was to be handcuffed to a chaise lounge, which meant he was crouched in a rather awkward position for a long period of time, agitating both his back and his already cramping uterus.
It was his cue for a line. He knew he had a line. Hell, on a better day, he'd even know what the line was. Alas, the pain was far too distracting and all he was able to get out was a breathy groan of discomfort.
The other actors looked at him in alarm for a moment, both concerned for their friend and also waiting for him to say his line so that they could go forward with the scene.
It was Chris who spoke up.
"Dennis?" she asked. A few techs began to look up in curiosity. Dennis couldn't breathe, the pain was so bad.
"Robert" he said, ignoring Chris. Robert looked down at him and raised an eyebrow. "Can you unlock me, please?" he asked. Robert still seemed skeptical but did as he was told and unlocked Dennis' handcuff.
Without another word, Dennis stumbled backstage and made a beeline for the men's dressing room. Chris instructed the others to work on their lines before she went to follow him.
As she suspected, the guys' dressing room door was closed so she knocked and waited for a response.
"Who is it?" Dennis asked, his voice sounding miserable.
"It's Chris" she responded. There was a pause.
"...Come in"
Chris walked in and was confused to not see Dennis anywhere in sight, though her confusion was quickly resolved when she spotted the bathroom door ajar. She walked in (if Dennis had his clothes off, the door would've been shut) and frowned as she saw him hunched over the toilet.
"What's going on, bud?"
"Everything hurts so bad" he whimpered. She realized then that he was crying and her heart broke a little more. "My back hurts and I'm on my period, which hasn't happened in years, and-"
"Hey, hey" she soothed, forcing a smile as she knelt next to him and patted him on the shoulder. "It's okay. Why didn't you say anything?"
"It's embarrassing" Dennis said and Chris was a bit taken aback. Dennis was many things but he was hardly ever embarrassed. "I mean, we all know I have pain issues, but I'm a guy, I shouldn't have... The other issue"
"You are a guy" Chris nodded. "With or without that. You're one of our best guys"
"Okay" Dennis said quietly. A moment passed before he retched suddenly. Nothing came up, which he appreciated because he hated throwing up, but the dry heaving was still painful. Chris frowned.
"You're done with rehearsal for the day" she told him, patting him on the back. He looked up at her with wide eyes. "Not because you're in trouble" she quickly clarified. "You need to rest"
"Yes, ma'am"
