Chronology : The night after David and Les first arrive
"So, the boys ain't orphans, huh Jack?" Crutchie asked, limping over next to the leader and sitting down. Jack chuckled.
"Yeh, they's got a motha and a fatha" Jack confirmed. Crutchie nodded as he contemplated this. He couldn't find it in his heart to be upset at them for it or upset at the kid for selling himself as a poor orphan boy. The kid was a natural and knew what would sell more papers. No one could judge him for that.
"How d'we know they ain't gonna jump ship if some'in bad happens?" Crutchie asked. He wasn't generally skeptical of others (he knew firsthand how annoying skepticism could be from when he first joined the Newsies and everyone assumed his bum leg was faked to sell papers), but it wasn't often they got guys with families.
"I's bet my money the kid'll stay on at least" Jack reasoned. "Davey... Eh, I's not so sure 'bout him, but it hardly mat's" he continued. "Wors' case scenario, they leave. Won' be the foist, won' be the last"
"It's sad when people leave"
"Makes it betta when they stay" Jack countered. Crutchie shrugged. "I'm always gonna stay if tha's what ya worried abou'"
"I ain't worried about you, Jack" Crutchie smiled. "You had my back even when I's was bran' new and the guys alls thought the leg was an act. I guess I's jus' a bit skeptical. Davey seems like a runner"
"Nah, I don' buy it" Jack smiled and leaned back, appreciating the night sky. "He's a family man an' we's his part time family while he an' the kid ain't at home with the real one. If push comes ta shove, he'll stay"
"Ya really think so?"
"...We's gotta have some optimism in this line o' business, Crutch"
