Original request : Chicago (2002) - Roxie Hart/Velma Kelly - (Post movie au) after a performance of theirs, velma retreats to her and roxies dressing room quicker than usual, not even grabbing a smoke before she left to get changed like usual. so obvi roxie is like wtf and goes to check on her to find a very-much-pissed-off-but-she’s-in-pain-so-she-just-wants-roxie velma kelly on the couch. (she has a thing that makes her joints painful im pretty sure it’s arthritis but idk) but ill give u creative liberty - neurodivergent velma and roxie, chronically ill velma kelly, (you do NOT have to write this i literally just came up with this silly ahh idea)
Chronology : Post-canon
Background relationship : Fred/Roxie (past, mentioned)
Headcanons : Velma has chronic pain, Velma has ADHD, Autistic!Roxie
Author's note : I'm not sure what the AU is supposed to be (wasn't specified, it just says "au") so I'm just gonna treat it as canon universe with the headcanons incorporated. Also "neurodivergent" is kinda vague so I'm just saying ADHD!Velma and Autistic!Roxie because that is the vibes I get from their movie portrayals. With that said, I hope this suffices <3
The show had gone very well. Or, at least, Roxie thought it did. However, Velma rushed off to the dressing room far quicker than usual afterward, and she suddenly wasn't so sure. Velma hadn't even grabbed a cigarette before retreating!
Something was definitely wrong.
When she walked into the dressing room, she was immediately met with the sight of Velma lying on the couch with a miserable expression on her face. Before Roxie could even properly react to what she was looking at, Velma spotted her in the doorway and groaned in annoyance.
"The hell do you want, blondie?"
"Are you okay?" Roxie asked, unsure of what else to say. She still wasn't really used to truly caring for another person. The closest she'd ever gotten prior to Velma was that fling Fred Casely, and we all know how that turned out.
Even then, she wasn't too sure if it was truly him that she liked. Sure, he was a good fuck and had a pretty face but, at the end of the day, she really only liked him for the business opportunity.
"What does it look like?" Velma asked. She felt absolutely awful. She wasn't sure what the reason was exactly and she wasn't too fond of doctors, but her joints had been getting worse as the years passed by. They were never particularly great, even aching when she was just a child, but recently they'd become downright unbearable.
At this exact moment, her joints felt like they were on fire, shooting pain throughout her whole body. She'd not been feeling to well before the show and should've known better than to give 110% during the show. Alas, hindsight was 20/20, and she hadn't done that. She never could seem to hold back during a show. The hyperactive energy that plagued her in day-to-day life so rarely had time to be let out like it was when she was dancing.
So, now she was paying the price.
"Well it looks like you're in pain" Roxie replied, not processing that the question had been rhetorical. "Are you in pain?"
"Yes, I'm in pain!" Velma snapped. The pain was too much and she really didn't want to deal with Roxie's idiotic questions at that moment. She just wanted to crawl into a hole and pass away. That certainly seemed more appealing than her current situation- Lying across a dirty couch, hardly even able to breathe because her body ached so badly.
"Do you wanna... Be left alone... Or..?"
"I..." Velma sighed. Truthfully, no. She did not want to be left alone. She just wanted Roxie to shut the fuck up and hold her until things got better, but she also couldn't really vocalize that without risking seeming too vulnerable. Her current position was vulnerable enough as it was. "No, I don't"
"Okay" Roxie replied. Awkward silence filled the room for a moment as neither of the women were entirely sure of what to do. Velma was far more focused on the burning in her joints and Roxie was stuck in a limbo of decisions. She couldn't leave because Velma didn't want her to leave, but she also couldn't approach the woman for fear of being hissed at. "What do you want me to do?"
"It doesn't matter"
"It kinda does"
"I just... Can you just shut up and... Come over here?" Velma asked miserably. Roxie swallowed thickly and nodded. She slowly walked over, lifted Velma's head slightly and sat down on the couch, resting the other woman's head in her lap. Velma shut her eyes, the light beginning to dig its way into her brain by way of a headache.
A small, pathetic groan rumbled out from her throat as she curled herself against the blonde, who just sat still like a person who had a cat or dog fall asleep on their lap and were therefore bound to stay in that position for as long as possible.
"It hurts" Velma whimpered. Roxie frowned. She'd heard Velma grumbling to herself about some pain in recent times but didn't think much of it. She didn't know if Velma was terminally ill or what exactly the case was, but that hardly mattered at that point. All that mattered was that she was there for her... Business partner.
"It's alright" Roxie muttered, even though they both knew very well that it was not, in fact, alright. "I've got you"
