Chronology : Post-canon
Headcanons : Robert has ADHD, FTM!Robert, Nonbinary!Terri, Autistic!Robert
Robert knew that Nikki's actual birthday had passed, but he didn't think much about it. Of course, he'd wished her a happy birthday and even cleaned up her usual workstation, but he'd honestly forgotten about it pretty quickly... Well, that was until he suddenly saw a bunch of photos coming up on his feed about a week later, showing how not only had she held a birthday party for herself, but all of the other salon workers were there.
All except for him, of course.
At first, he tried to ignore the pit in his stomach. He didn't care... Right? I mean, it would just be kind of petty to care, honestly. He and Nikki weren't super close. Maybe she'd sent an invitation in the group chat and he just missed it (a minute of scrolling revealed that had not happened). Either way, it wasn't that big of a deal anyways, and he honestly wasn't even sure if he would've gone even if he had been invited.
But, despite his efforts, that pit in his stomach remained. Why hadn't he been invited? Was it cause he was the only guy? No, that wouldn't make sense. Terri was nonbinary so it wasn't a girls-only type deal, and his transition had never changed what he did and did not get invited to. He thought maybe it was just cause they weren't as close as she was with some of the others, but that also didn't make sense because Janet was there... She and Janet talked even less.
He was spiraling fast, wondering why. What was so wrong with him that she didn't want to invite him? Or worse... Was he so boring that she just forgot to? Maybe she secretly hated him. Maybe he made her uncomfortable and never realized. Maybe she thought his quirks would get in the way of them having a good time. God, the party looked pretty fun too...
"Fuck" he muttered to himself, setting his phone down and lying on his couch. He hadn't felt lonely in a while, but this was different. He couldn't even go to the one person he usually would about it (Janet) because she had gotten invited, and he didn't wanna seem jealous. Truthfully, he wasn't jealous of any of his coworkers being invited. No, he was upset because he hadn't been... Christ, I'm pathetic.
He decided his best course of action would be to get some rest, but before he decided to knock out on the couch, he sent Nikki a short and simple text :
Happy birthday
