Full title on AO3 : She Flickers Out Like a Faulty Light Sometimes
Prompt : Fainting
Chronology : Post-canon
Background relationship : Tony/Alice (mentioned)
Headcanons : Penny has POTS, Paul has ADHD
Ever since she was a girl, Penny had dealt with this issue.
Whenever she stood up, she'd get really lightheaded. Sometimes it didn't even have such a clear trigger. She'd just get super lightheaded and sometimes that would escalate to nausea or fainting.
Her father had always been kind to her about it. He never made her feel like she was crazy or anything of that sort. It was just something that made her life occasionally more difficult than it needed to be.
Paul was also kind to her about it, once she explained it to him. He had his own quirks (like the fact that he had endless bounds of energy and would find himself talking for literal hours about fireworks if he had the opportunity), so he figured it would be hypocritical to fault her for it.
When she made the switch from painting to writing, she found herself fainting far less because she was sitting most of the time. Still, she had her moments where things got rough.
One of these moments was the day following everything with the Kirby family.
Everything had settled- Alice and Tony were going to get married, the fireworks blew up (so it wasn't like that was gonna happen again any time soon), the whole Ed pissed off the government had been dealt with, and so had Grandpa did tax evasion.
Still, the stress and constant activity from that time had weighed heavy on Penny without her even realizing it and, when the dust had finally settled, she found herself stuck in the thick of her illness.
She felt awful just sitting and working on her plays, so she stood up to stretch, but this quickly proved to be a mistake as she was immediately hit with a wave of lightheadedness and her vision began to rapidly cut in and out.
By some miracle, Paul happened to be both in the living room and also not completely stuck in his own little world, so he saw what was happening and quickly bolted over to catch his wife as she lost consciousness and fell.
He gently picked her up and moved her over to the couch, just to be sure she didn't get trampled over if someone came rushing through- That wasn't an uncommon occurrence in their household, after all.
After a couple of minutes, Penny began to stir. Paul, who'd sat down in the chair next to the couch (the one that wasn't Grandpa's chair), looked over at her with a small smile.
"Hey, Penny" he greeted. She looked over at him, a confused expression on her face. "You fainted"
"Oh, that's not good" she replied. Paul nodded. She tried to get up but that triggered immediate dizziness and so she lied back down again.
"Just rest, Penny" Paul told her, hiding his anxiety about the situation to the best of his ability. "Do you want me to go get you water?"
"That would be appreciated" Penny nodded. Paul got up to go to the kitchen. "And, Paul?" his wife said. He turned back to look at her. "Thank you"
He smiled and leaned down, kissing her on the cheek.
"Of course, dear"
