Headcanons : Dennis gets ulnar nerve palsy from the play, Female!Chris, Autistic!Dennis
Because of a tech malfunction, Dennis had hurt his left arm during the Cornley Drama Society's disastrous performance of The Murder At Haversham Manor. It wasn't anything super serious in the sense that his arm was neither broken nor sprained, but he had gotten ulnar nerve palsy which meant a lot of pain and numb fingers.
He'd been in a sling since then to prevent hurting himself further by moving around a lot, but it wasn't a cure-all to the pain. He found himself downing ibuprofen as much as he could following the guidelines on the bottle and overall wasn't having the grandest of times.
Chris felt bad for the guy. She also felt guilty because a part of her blamed herself. She hadn't gone over the tech bits with the techies all that much, after all. Maybe if she had, he wouldn't have gotten hurt. He didn't blame her, of course. Hell, even if she'd been the one to directly fuck up, he probably wouldn't have blamed her. He didn't blame the tech that caused him to get hurt either. He was too nice for any of that. But, she still felt bad.
She especially felt bad when she walked backstage to see him groaning in discomfort as he stretched out his arm (his doctor had told him to routinely take off the sling and stretch so his shoulder didn't lock up).
"Hey, buddy" she said sympathetically, sitting next to him on the couch. They didn't have another show planned just yet, but they still had their regular meetings. They'd just got done with one about safety since Dennis wasn't the only ER visit because of The Murder At Haversham Manor (and, even if he had been, one is still too many). "How's your arm doing?"
"Everyone keeps asking me that" Dennis observed. "You guys do know I have other things going on in my life beyond just my injury, right?" he asked. He didn't sound sarcastic or angry at all, just genuinely confused. Chris smiled weakly at him.
"I know" she nodded. "I'm just... Worried about you, is all"
"My arm is okay" he told her. "It still hurts a bit when I move it and my ring finger and pinky are both still numb, but it doesn't hurt nearly as much anymore" he explained. "It's more inconvenient than anything. I can't play guitar right now because of it"
"I'm sorry, Dennis" Chris said with a small shoulder pat. "I know how important that is to you"
"It's not the end of the world"
"It's not good either"
"Look, Christine" he started with a sigh. She clamped her mouth shut- Dennis never used her full name unless it was important. "Can we just... Not dwell on it?" he asked. "I don't want to turn into the guy who messed up his arm on stage. I just want things to be somewhat normal"
"Okay" Chris agreed with a nod, opening her arms to hug him, which he accepted (though he could only return one arm of the hug). "I'll drop it"
"Thank you"
