Chronology : During canon
Headcanon : Lumiere has ADHD
Aside from the chaos that came along with Belle's arrival in the castle, it was actually a time of tentative optimism and hope. Everyone of course knew that it could turn to shit at any moment (especially considering the beast's poor temper), but still. There was a lady in the castle. That meant a chance.
"Cogsworth!" the all-too-familiar candelabra shouted as he entered the room that the clock was in the middle of cleaning. Cogsworth had to bite back a miserable groan as he heard the grating voice.
"What did you do this time?" he asked in a tired tone, mentally prepping himself to deal with whatever chaos Lumiere had caused. Considering the disaster that was the girl's first castle dinner, he was half expecting fifty other servants to come around the corner and break out into a flash mob.
"Nothing" Lumiere replied, bringing a candle hand down to his chest. "I promise" he added at Cogsworth's skeptical expression. "I just... We could be human again"
"We could also never be freed from the spell" Cogsworth dismissed with a wave of his hand as he went back to brushing old crumbs off the shelves. His optimism was far more cautious than even Mrs. Potts', as he knew better than to get his hopes up. That would surely only lead to pain and disappointment. "The master isn't exactly a charmer"
"He can be" Lumiere countered, attempting to wax the table. Cogsworth knocked his arm away in annoyance. He hated when Lumiere tried to wax things, because it never actually made them pretty. It just covered surfaces in dried up candle wax that would stay there even after a thorough mopping. "We just need to give him the confidence to let his true self shine through!"
"And how exactly do you propose we do that?" the clock challenged, growing more and more irritable. Lumiere rolled his eyes. As many pet peeves as Cogsworth had with him, the biggest one that he had with Cogworth was just how pessimistic he was. Always questioning everything, always fighting solutions that weren't 100% foolproof.
"Cogsworth, can you relax for once?" he asked, setting an arm on his friend's shoulder (but being careful to keep the flame a healthy distance away from him). "The specifics can wait" he continued as the clock let out a tense sigh. "What matters is that there's a chance"
"A low chance"
"But a chance nonetheless" the candelabra insisted with a smug expression as Cogsworth allowed a small smile to grace his features. "See, you know I'm right"
"I suppose" Cogsworth caved with a small chuckle. "There is some hope to be had. I'll give you that"
"And so he keeps on ticking"
"One more pun and I extinguish your flames, Lumiere"
