Choir rehearsal was running as normal.
It had been a hard adjustment, switching to having Ocean as the director ever since Father Marcus died, but they were starting to get back on track. In this particular rehearsal, everyone was doing pretty well until Ocean decided to trail off of the focus to chastise Noel for a few notes he had been flat on (in reality, he had not been flat- Constance had just been sharp) and sparking an argument between the two.
No one noticed Jane go rigid in the back, likely because she was sort of always rigid, so you wouldn't pick up on it unless you were staring right at her. In fact, no one had even the slightest clue something was wrong until they started running the song again only to find themselves without their beautiful soprano part floating over the rest of them like it usually did.
Ocean quickly stopped the choir and impatiently looked up at the suddenly silent soprano. "Jane!" she called, annoyed as ever. The others looked at her, expecting a confused head tilt and a muttered apology for not paying attention but, instead, they were greeted with the pale classmate staring at the ground with wide eyes, shaking ever so slightly. "What on Earth are you doing?"
Without a word, Jane turned and bolted out of the choir room, leaving an utterly confused chamber choir behind her. Ocean began ranting about the poor girl and Noel took that opportunity to slip out- He didn't know Jane all that well, but he could tell something was clearly wrong. She never acted out, so he was sure she had a reason for her sudden absence beyond just being embarrassed. Did the girl even know what embarrassment was?
He walked out into the hallway and quickly spotted his classmate curled on the floor, repeatedly hitting herself in the head. He frowned and quickly kneeled in front of her, putting his hands under her own to stop her from hurting herself. "Jane, can you look at me?" A frantic shake of her head. "Can you tell me what's happening?"
"Loud" she muttered out, voice edged with discomfort as he breathed heavily. Noel nodded in understanding- Everyone in the choir was some breed of neurodivergent so they were no stranger to sensory issues. They'd just never had something like this happen with Jane before. "Ocean was shouting at you"
"I know, but we're not in there right now, okay?" he told her softly, getting a shaky nod in response. "How can I help you calm down right now?"
"Lights"
Noel looked around. The only light in the hallway was from the sun outside. Considering he couldn't exactly put out the sun, he had to quickly think of an alternative, which he did easily. "Do you want to go into one of the practice rooms?" he asked her. "They're soundproof and we could turn off the light" A nod. "Okay, follow me"
He helped her to her feet and led her back into the chorus room, which he noted was quiet now. As they walked past, he looked at the other choir members and held up a finger, indicating that he would explain momentarily as he opened one of the practice rooms and let Jane inside. He turned back to the others and walked over to quietly explain what had happened.
"She got overstimulated from ginger bitch over here screaming so damn much" he gestured to Ocean, who looked thoroughly embarrassed. "She probably has whatever Ricky and Mischa have"
'That would make sense' Ricky signed. 'I was beginning to think the same thing after an article I read about how Autism presents in girls, and that checks out pretty well'
"If Penny not singing right now, can we end rehearsal early?" Mischa asked. As much as he enjoyed the company of his friends, he didn't enjoy the choir aspect of it and loved any opportunity to cut a rehearsal early. Constance nodded in agreement with the sentiment. Ocean sighed.
"Fine" she conceded. "We need our star soprano for the balance to work out anyways. We can stop for today"
"Halle-fuckin'-lujah" Noel mumbled, grabbing his bag and walking over to the practice room where Jane was calming down. He cracked open the door slightly. "Rehearsal is over. Take your time, yeah? I'll wait by the piano till you're ready to go so I can lock up properly"
"Thank you"
"Of course"
