Chronology : Post-canon AU where they all survive the Cyclone accident
Headcanons : Autistic!Jane, they use ASL
Because Jane's face never really showed emotion anyways, no one could immediately tell she was shutting down. It also didn't help that her shutdowns more just meant she was on autopilot mode rather than some display of distress. She knew the songs well enough to where the rehearsal went without a hitch even though she was mentally not there in the slightest. It wasn't until after rehearsal everyone else was packing up and leaving that Ocean noticed the girl just sitting there, staring off into space as she fiddled with the hem of her skirt.
No one else seemed to notice and Ocean didn't want to draw any unwanted attention, so she waited for everyone else to leave before she cautiously walked over to the girl, who snapped her head up in attention, though kept her gaze completely away from the person in front of her. "Jane?" she started cautiously. "Are you feeling okay?"
"Lights" the brunette answered vaguely. That confirmed to Ocean that something was wrong beyond just the girl being tired. Even on the days when she didn't sleep the best, she generally spoke in complete sentences (that is, when she spoke at all). Ocean frowned and looked around the room. It wasn't obscenely bright in there, but she decided saying that likely wouldn't help, so she instead went and flicked off the lights. It wasn't pitch black since the lights from the two doors still trickled in, but it was much less oppressing to the stressed-out soprano.
"Is that better?" A nod. "That's good. Is there some way you can tell me what you need from me right now?"
Jane moved her hand up and down in a familiar gesture. It was one she performed whenever she was having a hard time speaking but was trying to force words out. Ocean was about to reassure her she didn't have to speak when the girl seemingly gave up, instead shifting to ASL. They all knew a fair amount of ASL for Ricky's sake, and that had proven to be a good time investment considering they were all some form of neurodivergent and most of them would go nonverbal from time to time.
'Could you stay here with me for a little while?'
"Of course" the ginger answered without hesitation. Before the accident, she probably wouldn't have even noticed the girl still sitting there. However, that whole mess of an experience, while traumatizing, taught her to be a bit more considerate of those around her. "Once you're feeling a little better, do you want to go bother Noel at work?" she offered. "I'll drive us. It's rarely busy there"
'I'd like that'
