Chronology : Post-canon AU where Paul isn't infected
Headcanon : Asexual!Paul
Emma came home from a particularly annoying day at work. Her weed farm was still in development, so she maintained a job at the local café in the meantime to help pay the bills. It was far from enjoyable, but at least she didn't have to sing at this one.
"Are you okay?" Paul asked as his girlfriend walked into the bedroom. "You look tired"
"Long day" the barista replied with a long, miserable sigh. Paul gave her a sympathetic smile and allowed her a spot next to him on the bed. "It's not nearly as awful as Beanie's, but that also doesn't mean shit" she continued. "Like, congratulations? You aren't overrun by alien zombies. Bare fuckin' minimum"
Paul chuckled at that. He was glad they were to a point now where they could joke about it. For a while, they had avoided it altogether. Nerves were still high and nightmares plagued them each passing dusk. But, now? It is what it is. Can't change what happened or the people they lost. Might as well make peace with it.
"Bad customers today?" the man asked with a knowing smile.
"Oh my god, you would not believe this one lady" Emma exclaimed, eliciting another chuckle from her boyfriend. "I don't know how I haven't snapped at anyone yet" she continued. "It's a fuckin' miracle, truly"
"Sounds fun" Paul muttered sarcastically. Emma gave a tired laugh. "You're home now, though"
"That I am" the barista replied with a yawn, lying down on the bed. Paul joined her in the restful position, allowing her to curl up against him. He liked cuddles. They weren't particularly physical but still allowed for the emotional intimacy that others got from... Well, whatever they did with the lights off.
"Is it possible for you to take off work tomorrow?" he asked gently. "You could use the rest"
"I mean, what's the worst they can do?" she asked rhetorically. "Fire me? 'Oh no! I need to find a new job that pays eight fucking dollars an hour'"
"I love you" Paul replied with a soft laugh. Emma smiled.
"I love you too, dork"
