Full title : Guilty Until Proven Innocent & You Aren't Able To Prove It If You Don't Speak English. Sorry About That!
Chronology : Extended version of the scene where Hunyak learns she is gonna be hanged
In her heart, Mama knew that Katalin was innocent. They all did, really. But, the jury didn't see it that way. Uncle Sam didn't see it that way and, with her final appeal being rejected, she was set to be the first woman who got hung in Illinois.
They'd gotten someone to write out a translation that she could understand to learn the news. Hire a translator for her trial? No, that would be expensive, but hey. Might as well let her know she's gonna get fucking executed, right?
She cried, muttering her worries and panic in Hungarian, but no one could understand her. The only message she could get to Mama and the officers around her was a scream of her all-too-familiar phrase. "NOT GUILTY!"
"I'm sorry, Katalin" Mama said sympathetically, helping the inmate to her feet and holding her close. It wasn't the woman's fault, the way the system was. But, there was nothing to be done with that last appeal lost. "Come on" she said gently, though she knew the blonde would likely not understand much of what she said. "We're gonna move you to a nicer cell for your final week"
She walked across the small catwalk, Mama holding her close, only managing a small glance to the attentive audience of her fellow inmates below as she quietly sobbed. Did they know? How many of them even believed her when she told them she was guilty? Would any of them even remember her beyond just being the one that got executed?
"I'm so sorry" Mama said quietly as she opened the door to a slightly nicer cell. This one had a few blankets- More luxurious than any of the non-death row inmates got. "If you need anything, just let Mama know" she told the woman, hoping at least the sentiment would get through the language barrier. "I'll do it- Free of charge"
"Not guilty..."
"I know"
