Chronology : During canon after the first school scene
Headcanons : Autistic!Yost, Autistic!Johnathan
Ichabod called for recess far earlier than he normally would, but the students hardly cared. After all, it's not like they learned a whole lot anyway. All Ichabod ever really did was berate them for not knowing the answers to things he never taught and beat them with his ruler.
Upon hitting the grass, Walter, Wilda, Johanna, and Hendrick ran out to play together, leaving Johnathan and the new kid behind. Those four had always gotten along quite well, but Johnathan could never figure out how to connect with them. Now, though, he wasn't alone in this feeling.
Yost was a good year or two above the normal school age, but he'd always been a little bit slower than the other people his age and his dad threatened to kick him out of the house if he didn't learn his numbers. While Johnathan was still technically school-age, he was set to be graduating that same year and felt just as ignorant as when he'd gotten there.
He had felt bad for the new guy when he'd been forced to sit in the corner with the dunce cap. He'd been forced into that same position more times than I can count.
"Your name was Yost, right?" Johnathan asked awkwardly, getting a nod in response. "You're one of the Sleepy Hollow boys that follow Brom Bones around"
"I don't mean to cause any trouble" Yost said in the same slow, stilted tone he always spoke in. His words were always lightly slurred together, but Johnathan couldn't judge. After all, he wasn't much better himself, what with a heavy lisp and a general lack of distinguished consonants. "I have just come here to learn my numbers"
"I'm not here to judge you, don't worry" Johnathan held up his hands in defense. "Besides, I could use a friend" he gestured to the other kids playing together. "I'm the oldest out of all of us- Well, except now you- You'd think they'd wanna be my friend for that at least"
"I can be your friend" Yost said with a small smile, awkwardly holding out his hand for the other boy to shake, which he did. "I don't got a lot of those either"
"We can help each other out then"
"Speaking of which- Could you help me memorize the times tables that were on the board?" Yost asked, scratching at the back of his neck nervously. Johnathan smiled and nodded.
"Of course" he agreed. "What are friends for?"
