Title from : From Now On from The Greatest Showman
Phineas sat alone in the bar. Everything he had worked for was gone. The circus was burned down. The performers all went off to bigger and better things and, honestly? He couldn't even blame them. He had treated them like shit. They didn't owe him anything.
That, of course, wasn't even touching his failed marriage. The lady he had fought so hard to be with had left him. Once again, he couldn't even really blame her. He had been a shitty husband. Not because he couldn't make them consistently rich. Charity had never cared about that. But, Phineas had gone off and done a ton of shit without even talking to her about it. The circus, the trip with Jenny... Everything
And so, Phineas sat alone in the bar. This bar was important to him. Of course, it had great alcohol, but it was more than that. This was where he met... Where is Carlyle? he wondered. If Phillip had left as well, Phineas would understand of course. He hadn't particularly been shitty to Carlyle but the circus had kinda fucked up the man's reputation with his parents.
Before he could dwell on it further, he heard the door to the bar open. He looked over and, speak of the devil, it was Phillip fucking Carlyle.
"Carlyle" Phineas said, standing up with a smile. Phillip didn't seem as happy to see the ringmaster, maybe even a bit annoyed, but he didn't seem angry at him. "Barnum" Phillip replied as he sat next to him, tapping the bar as an indication for the bartender to give them drinks.
"I thought you were injured" Phineas said quietly, avoiding eye contact. "Yeah, well" Phillip replied, silently thanking the bartender as he received his glass of whiskey. "I recovered, clearly" he said sarcastically, but Phineas recognized that it was not malicious. Phineas just nodded in response, taking a sip of his own whiskey before Phillip spoke up again.
"So, Phineas" Phillip started, looking over at his former boss. "Why are you sulking alone in the bar? Don't you have a wife and kids and shit?" he asked, and Barnum actually chuckled at hearing him curse because it almost never happened.
"Well, Carlyle, shockingly my wife wasn't a big fan of me running off with another woman for a world tour" he replied with a tired smile. Phillip raised an eyebrow at this "I mean, can't say I blame her. That's kinda shitty. But, you're single now?" he asked, gaining a confused look from Phineas
"I mean, technically yes" the ringmaster responded "Why?"
"No reason" Phillip said with mock innocence as he turned back to his drink. Phineas was still sulking, and Phillip wasn't the biggest fan of that. So, without fully thinking things through, he got up onto the bar. The bartender just ignored him. He was used to these two's batshit insane antics at this point.
"I saw the sun begin to dim, and felt that winter wind blow cold" Phillip began to sing, looking down at Phineas. "What in God's name are you doing, Carlyle?" Phineas asked with a slightly amused expression. Without responding to the question, Phillip continued singing
"A man learns who is there for him" he continued, jumping off of the bar and looking at the ringmaster "When the glitter fades and the walls won't hold"
"Okay Phillip, you're trying to cheer me up, I get-"
"Cause from the rubble, what remains can only be what's true" Phillip interrupted, gesturing for Phineas to get up and join in. Barnum, realizing he really had nothing left to lose, got up and played along. Phillip was trying to cheer him up. It's sweet
"If all was lost, there's more I gained" Phineas sang, searching his mind frantically to come up with more lyrics. Phillip caught onto this and sang the next part "Cause it led me back..."
"To you" they said in unison. They both felt... Something adjacent to love but that couldn't be possible. You're just buzzed they both thought to themselves Just continue the song Phillip thought as he thought up more lyrics
"Uh..." He stuttered out before finding words "From now on, these eyes will not be blinded by the lights" he continued singing. Phineas chuckled. The lyrics didn't really make much sense in the context of what Barnum went through but Phillip was winging it anyways, so it didn't matter
"And from now on" the ringmaster sang, giving Phillip a knowing smile "What's waited till tomorrow starts tonight... It starts tonight"
"Let this promise in me start" they sang in unison now. How they both knew the next lyrics, neither could tell. Maybe they were just on the same wavelength or something. It didn't matter to them anymore, though, and the bartender literally did not care "Like an anthem in my heart. From now on... From now on"
Phillip sat on the bar now, continuing the song with big, sweeping hand gestures to demonstrate emotion. Turns out, working in the circus for a year plus some really gave someone the theatrics needed to carry a song
"I drank champagne with kings and queens" he sang, reflecting on his rich boy life that he had prior to joining the circus "The politicians praised my name. But those were someone else's dreams. The pitfalls of the man I became"
It had some truth to it. He had never really wanted the lavish lifestyle he previously had. That was all his parents. Deep down, he always just wanted to be free, and Barnum, for all his faults, gave him that. Phillip would be forever grateful
"For years and years" Phineas sang now, sitting on a barstool in the same manner that Phillip sat on the bar "I chased their cheers. The crazy speed of always needing more"
"But when I stop" they sang in unison again "And see you here, I remember who all this was for"
They went on and on and on with the song for way longer than necessary, but neither cared about that at this point. All that mattered was that, even if their individual lives had crumbled apart and literally burned in Barnum's case, they had each other.
And that's all that mattered
