Full title : Always In A Place To Face That Realm Called Outer Space
Title from : A line Ricky says in Ride the Cyclone
Warning : Talks of death, grief
Chronology : Post-canon
It was a week after Courtney passed away.
Star was very familiar with death. She'd had plenty of friends die and she knew she was at constant risk of kicking it herself, but Courtney was different. Courtney had just been so okay leading up to her death. Hell, she was supposed to be getting out of the hospital the very next day.
It wasn't fair.
The young actress had become more withdrawn, a stark contrast to her usual, sarcastic self. She was afraid to interact with any of the other kids at the hospital because what if they died too? It was a legitimate thing that could happen for most of them.
The following week, Jeff decided to visit her.
He walked in without knocking, not that Star even cared at that point. "Hey, Star"
"What do you want?" she asked him, though there was no fight left in her voice. Only a resigned sadness. Jeff rolled his eyes.
"Is that any way to greet your friend?"
"Jeff, I don't have the time for this shit"
"You have all the time in the world"
"Actually, no" Star snapped, sitting up. "I don't. None of us do. That's why we're in here" she told him sharply. He frowned and looked away. "Except for you, maybe" she continued. "Can chronic insomnia kill you?"
"I've chosen not to look into that answer" he replied quietly. "I'm sorry about your friend"
"Okay" Star groaned, lying back down with a small cough. "Is that all you came here to say? We're all fucking sorry about Courtney"
"I came to check on you" he replied. "Because I care about you"
"Mm"
"Star"
"What?" Star asked, growing more irritated by the second.
"Can I hug you?" Jeff asked, catching her off guard. She got a good look at him again, that beautiful face, and began to feel a little guilty for how she'd treated him throughout the entire conversation.
"Please" she muttered, tears threatening to spill from her eyes. He nodded and lied down next to her, holding her close. "I'm sorry for being a dick"
"It's fine" he dismissed. "I just want to help"
"Thank you, Jeff"
"Any time"
