Roxie had been walking away when she suddenly seemed to think of something, as evidenced by the sharp pause in her tracks and the "Oh!" that left her mouth at the same time, followed by her turning around with a judgmental expression. "And here's a little piece of advice, direct from me to you"
"Lay off the caramels" she said with a sick grin. She make a small clicking noise with her tongue and then walked away, leaving Velma to contemplate those words. Logically, she knew Roxie probably didn't mean much by it. It had just been a shitty jab to get back for the "advice" Velma had given her previously.
But, it still managed to bring up some of Velma's worst insecurities, so she promptly gave the box of chocolates to Hunyak and didn't eat for the rest of the day.
Roxie and Velma got off stage from their latest show and Roxie noticed Velma wavering. She was a bit paler than usual and seemed to be shaking all over. Before she could even say anything about it, Velma collapsed, just nearly being caught by Mama, who had come backstage to congratulate them on a show well done.
"Woah there, kid" Mama said, visibly concerned. Velma quickly shoved her away, still shaky on her feet, before running off to the bathroom. "Roxie" the matron said, getting the blonde's attention. "Go make sure she's okay, yeah?"
"Velma?" Roxie called, knocking on the door to the small backstage bathroom, getting nothing in response. For a second, she wondered if Velma was even in there, but she could see the shadow under the door. "I know you're in there. Can you please tell me what's wrong?"
The door clicked and opened, revealing a tired and pissed-off Velma Kelly.
"Oh, like you suddenly care how I'm doing" she spat bitterly, walking past her stage partner and going to the nearest mirror to wipe off her makeup.
"Velma, you collapsed" Roxie rolled her eyes. "You owe me an explanation"
"I don't owe you shit"
"Velma" Roxie pleaded, reaching over to touch her shoulder, but the other woman smacked her hand away. "Tell me what's wrong"
"Why should I?" Velma laughed humorlessly. "You'd just make fun of me anyways"
"I promise I won't"
"Fine" Velma caved, more out of wanting to be left alone than anything. "You wanna fucking know?" she asked, turning fully towards the blonde. "I don't eat because I'm too caught up with wanting to 'keep my figure for the stage' or however the fuck you worded it"
"Wait, no, that can't..." Roxie was at a loss for words. "We had dinner with Billy Flynn and Mama just the other day! I saw you eat"
"Yeah, and I threw it up afterward"
"Velma..."
"What?" Velma asked, exhausted with the conversation. She held eye contact with Roxie, as though daring her to make a remark. Roxie sighed and, then, to her shock, wrapped her arms around her. "What the fuck are you doing?"
"I'm sorry" the blonde muttered. "I'm sorry for ever making you feel bad about yourself, or ever unknowingly encouraging... This"
"Since when do you apologize to people?"
"Since when do you open up to me?" Roxie countered. The two fell silent for a moment until Velma eventually broke it with a laugh. "Promise me you'll try to eat something when we get back to the hotel?" Roxie asked (pleaded). "And you won't throw it back up?"
...
"Yeah, I'll try"
