Warnings : Mentions of Ocean's shitty views that she expressed in What The World Needs as well as past infantilization
Chronology : Post-canon AU where the choir kids survive the Cyclone accident
Background relationships : Noel/Mischa, Mischa & Ricky
Headcanons : FTM!Ricky, Ricky uses an AAC device to communicate, Autistic!Ricky (if you squint)
Ever since Karnak's sick game, the Saint Cassian Chamber Choir kids saw each other a little differently. They respected each other more than they ever had before, and they finally felt like a group of friends rather than just peers who did choir together.
This led to many developments in their individual relationships- Noel and Mischa started dating almost immediately afterward, Jane was now included in virtually everything the choir did, Constance and Ocean's friendship improved greatly, everyone now saw Ricky for who he was rather than just the cripple- However, the development that surprised everyone the most was what was happening between Ocean and Ricky.
The mere concept was rather absurd. Ocean, who had sung a whole pro-eugenics song and who had always infantilized the disabled, giving bedroom eyes to, again, the cripple.
What was more surprising than her being suddenly into him was that he was receptive to it. He had never cared much for her before the game- He didn't appreciate how she would talk down to him all the while praising herself for being an "advocate for accessibility", but he'd been charmed by all the personal growth she'd made during the game. Now, she listened to him, as much as she could listen to anyone, and she was clearly upset with herself whenever her older, ignorant views got brought up.
They grew closer, spent more and more time together, and it was starting to get to the point where it needed to be addressed because whatever was happening between them certainly wasn't platonic anymore.
The issue? Ricky hadn't yet come out to her. In fact, the only person in the choir who even knew he was trans was Mischa, because they'd been super close friends ever since the Ukrainian arrived in Uranium City. It wasn't any of their business, after all. It was just one part of his life. One background detail.
However, if he was gonna potentially be dating Ocean (which could always lead to more... Intimate interactions between the pair), he figured he should probably tell her.
That was another problem, though. He had no idea how she would react. As much as she'd gotten better at the whole genuine acceptance of other people, not just acting supportive for brownie points thing, he had no idea how she stood on the topic of trans people. What if she didn't like him anymore? Or, worse, what if she outed him to the rest of the choir?
It weighed on his mind so heavily that he eventually decided he just had to rip it off. It's like a bandaid he thought to himself. Just rip the bandaid off, Ricky
'Hey, Ocean' his AAC device buzzed after one rehearsal, once everyone else had left. The redhead smiled and looked over at him, quickly finishing up what she'd been doing and set her music aside so she could give him her full, undivided attention. 'Can I talk to you about something?'
"Of course" Ocean nodded earnestly, walking over to where he was on the risers and sitting next to him.
'I like you a lot' he typed out, keeping his gaze on his tablet to avoid her eyes. 'A LOT a lot' he continued. 'But, there's something that I haven't told you and probably should before anything MORE happens'
"What is it, Ricky?"
'I'm trans' the device spoke, and that was followed by a heavy silence between them. At first, it was just Ocean waiting to see if he was done saying his piece, but that quickly turned into neither of them being too sure how to follow that.
"I'm not sure I understand" Ocean eventually spoke. Ricky let out a short exhale before frantically typing again.
'I was a girl and then I transitioned to be a guy' he explained in general terms. 'And I understand if you hate me now or if you feel like I lied to you'
"Ricky, can you look at me please?" the redhead asked, her tone unreadable to the tenor, who shakily looked up at her, his eyes darting around his face until they eventually settled on her mouth. "Can I hug you?"
Ricky nodded and allowed her to wrap his arms around him, slowly returning it even though he was still shaking horribly with anxiety. "I could never hate you" she told him gently. "I don't... I'm not gonna pretend I understand entirely" she chose her words carefully. "But I'm not mad at you, and... I'd like to continue with whatever we have going on, if that's okay with you"
Ricky wanted to cry.
'I'd love to' he typed out with one free hand. Ocean smiled and let him go so he could continue to communicate more easily if he wanted to. 'I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner'
"I get it" she assured him. "We live in a small town. I haven't been the greatest in the past. Besides, it's not really any of my business if you don't want it to be" she continued. "Thank you for trusting me with this, though"
'Please don't tell the others' he pleaded. 'The only other one who knows is Mischa'
"It's not my business to tell them" she nodded. "So, you don't need to worry"
'Thank you, Ocean'
"I love you"
'Yeah' his voice buzzed, a small smile spreading across his features. 'I love you too'
