Chronology : During canon
Upon getting into prison, Velma quickly realized that she didn't feel like doing her own laundry, so she went to seek out someone who would.
Katalin seemed like the perfect candidate. After all, she didn't speak English and was desperate for money. As hopeless as she felt in her legal battle, she knew that Billy Flynn would be her key to freedom, especially since she wasn't even actually guilty.
Katalin also knew that getting him would cost an arm and a leg.
So, when Velma came up to her, vaguely gesturing between a one-dollar bill and a stack of unwashed clothing, she nodded graciously and swiftly got to work.
Velma was free of that chore and Katalin got money (it'd be a long way before she could afford a lawyer, but it was still steady, consistent pay)
It was a win-win situation and they both quietly appreciated each other for it.
